Father’s Day gives us a reason to spend a little more time with the dads and grandads in our lives. But for families with an older father living independently, there can also be another thought sitting quietly in the background:

Is Dad okay when we’re not there?

For brothers and mCare Digital founders Peter and Paul Apostolopoulos, that question is deeply personal.

Long before mCare Digital existed, their own father Michael experienced the kind of situation many Australian families worry about.

The experience that started mCare Digital

Paul shares the story of how Michael was out driving one day when he became unwell and disoriented.

“Dad was out driving, became unwell but recovered himself enough to get home. Like so many people of his generation, he didn’t want to make a fuss — and of course his mobile phone was where it always is: at home, in a cupboard, out of charge.”

Michael’s wife persuaded him to go to hospital, where the family discovered he had suffered a stroke.

“It is only sheer good luck that he was still with us.”

Michael recovered, but the experience stayed with his sons. What would have happened if he hadn’t made it home? What if he had needed help while he was away from his phone? And could there be a simple way for families to stay connected without taking away the independence their loved ones valued?

Those questions ultimately became part of the inspiration for mCare Digital.

Creating a personal alarm that Dad will actually want to use

Peter, with a background in health technology, and Paul, a marketing professional, began looking for a better way to give families connection and reassurance while allowing the person wearing the device to continue living independently.

The result was the mCareWatch range of personal alarms.

Unlike a traditional home-based personal alarm, an mCareWatch is designed to provide support beyond the four walls of the home.

Depending on the device and setup, features can include SOS calling, two-way communication and GPS location functionality, helping the wearer call for assistance when they need it.

For Peter and Paul, however, the technology has never been the most important part.

It is what that technology allows people to keep doing. Paul shares,

“Hearing so many real-life stories from real families has been by far the greatest reward. One man called and told us that the last conversation he ever had with his dad was on the watch. Another told us how happy he is to be able to talk to his daughter every morning on the watch and how safe he feels when he is outside of the home.”

More flexibility with the mCareWatch Dual 261

Today, the mCareWatch family has grown to include the mCareWatch Dual 261, designed to give wearers even more flexibility in how they use their personal alarm.

The Dual 261 combines watch and pendant wearability in one device.

Dad might prefer wearing it on his wrist while he’s out during the day, then switch to the pendant configuration when that feels more comfortable.

It means the technology can adapt more easily to his routine, rather than asking him to adapt his life around the technology.

And importantly, a personal alarm isn’t about constantly watching over someone.

For many families, it is about creating a balance between independence and connection.

Dad can continue going about his day, while knowing he has a way to seek assistance should he need it

A different kind of Father’s Day gift

There are plenty of traditional Father’s Day gifts: socks, books, tools, another bottle for the collection.

But if your dad is getting older, perhaps the most meaningful gift is something less tangible.

Independence. Confidence. Connection. Peace of mind.

A personal alarm can’t replace family, and it certainly doesn’t replace spending time together.

Instead, it can provide another way to stay connected during all those ordinary days between birthdays, Christmases and Father’s Days.

For the Apostolopoulos family, that is where the mCare Digital story began: with two sons who wanted their dad to be able to reach someone when he needed them.

Years later, that same idea continues to help Australian families stay connected to the people they love.
